PANCAKES
FOR BREAKFAST
by Tomie De Paola
Pancakes For Breakfast by Tomie De Paola is a humorously
illustrated picture book of an old woman who wakes up
and craves pancakes. Thinking pancakes, she gets up,
washes up, dresses up and puts her long white apron on
and begins to make her pancakes, only to find she has no
eggs, milk, butter or maple syrup. As she gathers the
eggs, milks the cow and churns the butter her dog and
cat watch her every move. She returns home from
purchasing fresh maple syrup only to find that her furry
friends have feasted on all of her gathered ingredients.
She is frustrated, sad, very tired... and still hungry
for pancakes. All of sudden she smells something
cooking. Is she dreaming? The pancake aroma lures her to
the neighbors house where she invites herself in for
breakfast and eats "all" of their pancakes.
I recommend that you read this book with your
children and have them write the story in their own
words. This will stimulate their memory, improve their
writing skills and teach them thought organization. The
recipe the old women uses is the only actual text in the
book. You can try her recipe or use mine. It is simple
enough that your children will soon be able to make
pancakes on their own and the only thing that you will
need to gather is some extra sleep. Bon Appetit!.
Chef Ruth Ellen’s Pancake Recipe
1 cup flour
2 Tbsp. Sugar
2 Tbsp. Baking Powder
½ tsp. Salt
1 Egg
2 Tbsp. Vegetable oil
1 cup milk
Vegetable oil for cooking
In a medium mixing bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking
powder and salt with a spatula.
In a mall bowl mix egg, oil and milk with a whisk. Add
wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix gently until
well mixed, but still lumpy. Let batter sit for five
minute. It is fun to see the baking powder activate and
the batter will rise and double in volume. Stir mix down
and add a little milk thinning to pouting consistency.
Heat and oil your skillet over medium low heat...and
make pancakes, large or mini.
Chefs Note: Add blueberries or chocolate chips to
your pancakes. Use your imagination! |
